"An Interview with Jennifer Band
(A QueryTracker Success Story)
Jennifer Band recently signed with agent Chris Morehouse of Dunham Literary, Inc. Congratulations Jennifer, and thank you for doing this interview.
Query Tracker: How long have you been writing?
Jennifer Band: I have studied writing for the last six years with UCLA Extension and am currently being mentored by Francesca Lia Block, but I started my first book about two years ago.
QT: Is this your first book?
QT: How long have you been working on this book?
JB: Two years and we are about to go out with it.
QT: Do you follow a writing "routine" or schedule?
JB: I follow the muse, which is very impish and coy some days, but generally write about 5-10 thousand words a week
QT: How many times did you re-write/edit your book?
JB: I have edited and re-edited so, so, many times and continue to fidget, as Paul Valery said, "A poem is never finished only abandoned," that basically applies.
QT: Did you have beta readers for your book?
JB: My husband is my first reader, he fixes my ridiculously bad spelling and grammar-I'm dyslexic. He's not a big reader, so it's like working with a blank slate you really have to win over.
QT: Did you outline your book, or do you write from the hip?
JB: The hip, bones, heart...I follow the scene as it appears in front of my mind.
QT: How long have you been querying for this book? Other books?
JB: This is my first book and it took me about a month to find the right agent.
QT: Would you be willing to share your query with us?
Dear Ms. Morehouse,
I am seeking representation for my memoir, A Model Life.
A Model Life is a YA memoir about my transformation from dyslexic-chubby-grade school-outcast to teenage model, and the 5 years I spent in the fashion business traveling the globe alone; a hideously beautiful world that I just managed to survive. Set in the early nineties when chaperones were rarely, if ever provided, and abuse, emotional and physical was the norm, my story is the Grimm's fairytale version of what the public thinks of as a glamorous life.
As a model, I worked for such magazines as Seventeen, YM, Allure, Elle, Vogue Bambini, was on several covers including Sassy and Maxim, and did campaigns for California Tan, Pepe Jeans, Dannon, Baby Ruth and Ford. At nineteen I moved back to New York to study acting and soon relocated to Los Angeles where I became a successful working actor (General Hospital, CSI:Miami, and more). My website has a complete listing of my acting credits, modeling photos and biography. I also have an active presence on My Space.
A Model Life is the first in a series of YA memoirs I plan on writing about acting, dating/marrying a rock star, and surviving a serious illness. The book I am currently working on is a YA magical realism titled Seaspray.
I am blessed to have Francesca Lia Block as my mentor. Additionally, the past five years I have studied writing at UCLA extension and just graduated from their master class in memoir writing program. I have contributed to Dime Stories for NPR, reading from an excerpt of A Model Life. Follows are nine pages from A Model Life. The full manuscript is done and has 51,742 words, 69 chapters (I write short chapters) and 240 pages. Currently, the full manuscript is out to three other agents. Please let me know if I can provide you with anything else.
Thank you for your time.
